Ford goes beyond the limits and expectations that people expect of a particular vehicle. The all-electric crossover Mustang Mach-E got some attention, but it wasn’t really the beginning of the perception push. The EcoBoost version of the vaunted F-150 is a decade old, and many truckers shouted at their TVs and Computer monitors that a small displacement turbo engine had no place in America’s favorite car. Although not electric, or even a hybrid, it proved what is possible. This is normal now, and the Lightning EV version of the F-150 is coming soon. With that in mind, I designed the 2021 Ford F-150 4X4 PowerBoost Hybrid for a week’s ride.
Overview of the Hybrid F-150
This is where I usually drive you, dear readers, through the model and the trim level in and out of what I’m testing. And I would still do that, but let me just say that Ford’s website is more ambiguous than usual. Most manufacturers show off their hybrid variants and sometimes treat them like completely different models. Ford notes that the F-150 has a “hybrid available” (vs. “hybrid standard” for the Maverick) and even lists it under the “Trucks and Vans” as well as under the “Electrified” tab.
One would think that clicking on “Build and Price” from the Electrified tab would get a power boost hybrid. Yes, no, you have to go to Ford’s complex “Build Your Own” section and successfully go for a combination of trim, cab size, and bed that will allow hybrid drive trains.
Let’s get started, not regular Cab XL… nope, just gas. Regular Cab XLT; not just 2.7L, 3.3L, and 5.0L petrol engines. SuperCab XL… No. SuperCab XLT, negative super cab larynx, none. On the Super Crew, wow lucky first time! The XL SuperCrew 3.5L Power Boost is available with Full Hybrid V6. Hybrid is available as an option in XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited trims, but not in Off Road Tremor, and Off Road Racing Raptor.
It was exhausting for Ford, and I didn’t even look at the features and options. Hopefully the Ford sales person can make that easier.
To make something like this, basically start with a Lariat SuperCrew. This is a bit contradictory as the Lariat Series is listed as the first item on the left, but it is actually part of the standard equipment of this car. I think. The PowerBoost will leak at $ 3,300, the two-tech package and Ford’s CoPilot360 will add a pair, the Pro Power plugs at the back are $ 750, the internal Working level is $ 150, FX4 off-road (ish) package is great, about $ 700 for power tailgate, and about $ 800 for wheel and bed liners.
The grand total is over $ 66,600. That’s one of the most decent things to do, and it should end there. So is this low cost Ford truck with hybrid power train just as good auto discount price?
Interior
Admission is much more interesting. The first thing you notice is that it looks like a shifter that might be able to flatten down. And yes, yes it can. Why?
Exterior
There’s news out there; it’s basically like any other F-150. Ford doesn’t have big “hybrid” badges, in fact the only way to tell if it’s a hybrid is a small “power boost” badge on the front door. Otherwise, it’s just a pretty normal F-150, not really much to talk about here.
It sounds like a truck, truck, truck. What, what, what kind of tires are found. Baby, move your butt, butt, butt. Sorry, that sounds weird, started to channel Sisqó. I was wondering what he is doing these days?
Ford is focusing on how to make the truck a more useful tool for the working person. Lots of trucks are playing big Oli Center consoles that can hold a lot of things, and are even capable of hanging file folder storage. Ford takes this one step further as the level of internal work increases. At 5 165 you have a small desk to work on. This chip seems to be enjoying it.
I’ve never really used it, and probably won’t use it unless I spread some picnic-style fast food on it. Still, it’s a smart option. Unfortunately, the chrome strip on the back of our center console will strangely reflect the light around the cabin while I was driving. It was annoying and I kept looking at it.

Elsewhere, the F-150 is a large, comfortable truck with large support seats and a comfortable ride. The back is also quite comfortable. My youngest fell asleep behind him whenever he was there, and that is not often the case. Although we found out he was getting up at 3:30 to watch Netflix, he probably had something to do with it.
Driving
The F-150 Power Boost Hybrid operates like a typical F-150, except that it is completely silent at low speeds. It takes a while to get used to it, but in EV mode it will echo quietly in your neighbourhood, startling pedestrians along the way. These are the children of the future, maybe they will get used to it. With the transfer of gas from the EV, the start-stop feature was not always smooth. Occasional fires in petrol engines cause tremors. I usually turn them off, and in my opinion they represent a bridge between EV and gas that will never exist. When the 3.5L hybrid burns, you get 430 horsepower and 570 lb.-ft. Which means the F-150 can carry some donkeys.
On the road you will realize a huge amount of fuel. While the PowerBoost gets a 24 City, 24 Highway EPA rating that doesn’t really outperform the 2.7L Eco-Boost’s 21/26 range estimate, it does it with more power and something like a 650 mph range. I got the hack out of it and had to refuel my week long debt.

Participating in the “Scouting for Food” campaign by Boy Scouts of America, we put the F-150 to good use. The truck acted as one of two pickup trucks (get it) that donated “Oh He Picked Up” (the other happened to be an EL campaign). The rear view bed camera helped me keep an eye on the eagle, what was happening behind me as I slowly walked through the neighborhood streets, accepting food bags picked up by the scouts. We packed everything into an F-150 coffee bed and left it at the food bank.
Summary
It’s funny, the idea of a $ 66,000 truck isn’t that weird these days. You can spend a lot, so I guess it’s relative. Maverick’s initial success may mean pushing smaller, cheaper, options, but is currently the leading dog in the United States in terms of total sales of F-150 vehicles. I would protect you from “they sell one quote every x second”.
The number of options keeps increasing if you want an F-150. Two Echo Boosts, one V6, one V8, this hybrid, and soon EV Lightning. This is the future we are living in, and the F-150 is a great jack of all trades option to check out. Just plan to spend some time on their website configurator.
