The previous CRX did get better mileage, as did some older cars. They also had less power. They also didn’t have to meet more stringent emissions standards, side-impact standards and frontal crash standards. None came with airbags, antilock breaks, stability control or TPMS. We’ve increased vehicle safety, but that’s negatively impacted vehicle weight and hence fuel economy. Honda isn’t going for ultimate fuel efficiency with the CR-Z, but is trying to balance performance and efficiency – much like the larger hybrids (Fusion, Altima, Camry, etc.). Granted 122hp isn’t going to make for exciting performance, but it should fare better than the Insight.
