November 2006 Enterprising locals in Battambang, Cambodia, have developed a unique railway. It’s made from recycled tank wheels, small motorcycle engines and lashings of bamboo. Cambodia’s main train service only runs four times a month and derailments are common. Little wonder locals prefer a different option. ‘Norries’ are little more than bamboo slabs with wheels and run on the state-built track. With a top speed of 50 km per hour, the norry network is far superior to the train. As one driver explains; “People like these because they’re fast and on time”. When is Veterans Day? What is Veterans Day? On Saturday 25th June, 2011 the Royal British Legion Scotland Motorbikes paraded down the Royal Mile High Street and through Holyrood Park past the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood Palace, celebrating the 90th anniversary of the UK Royal British Legion Scotland. This included 90 Harley Motorbikes leading the parade ahead of the Armed Forces. A Search and Rescue Helicopter was due to fly down the High Street but I never witnessed that. According to STV News, an incident on Saturday involving a mobile phone being thrown out of a commercial jet caused delays at Edinburgh Airport including preventing some of the flying particpants from landing at Edinburgh and thus not being able to take part in some of the days aerial armed services events. At midday bang on schedule unlike the parade of military forces which was forty minutes delayed for some unexplained reason, the Red Arrows carried out a flypast over the Parliament from the East Coast across the top of Edinburgh Castle towards Leith. He estimates the new vehicle will cost about 4000 Euros and travel a maximum speed of about 93 miles per hour. As a former Formula one motor racing engineer, Negre strongly believes he is introducing the car of the future to the market — he’s hoping by the beginning of 2010. According to Negre, his engine is twice as efficient as regular cars, using up to 60 percent of its capacity, and offers a zero-pollution vehicle suitable for urban driving. [Guy Negre, French Inventor & Engineer]: “Some experts say there are 400 thousand deaths in Europe, due to traffic pollution. So our ways with cars in cities will have to change completely, so we will need clean cars, I think one day or another, polluting cars will be banned from cities, which means there will be only electric cars left, and ours.” The car’s engine will move the pistons using pressurized air. The engine, topped by an electric motor, emits only fresh air out of an almost frozen exhaust pipe. Some experts, however, are skeptical.
